The developers have also added the ability to automatically pick up gold, but they’ve made that feature optional in case you feel that it hinders the experience of the original game. Diablo 2 players were doing this anyway, but there wasn’t a formal way of pulling it off until now.

(edit to say: wow, and all those people posted while I was typing, and I had no idea everyone else would recommend Titan Quest). For example, Rob Gallerani of Vicarious Visions said that the team had made it possible to create a shared stash that lets you easily move inventory between characters. But if you’re only playing through it once, you won’t notice that! Titan Quest is very good too, and in the same genre, though it suffers on repeated playthroughs because things aren’t randomized. Plus the expansion pack is very good, if you have that. And the first time you play through, you don’t have to worry too terribly much about surviving (well, I always breeze through until I hit Diablo, then I start cursing and have to work to take him out). Even as old as it is, the cutscenes are really great for driving the story along, and even though it’s certainly not perfect (no official way to re-spec your character, the necessity of playing inventory tetris to make everything fit), no game since hits that obsessive compulsive chord as well as Diablo II does (someone here described it as a “loot jackpot” and that’s really what it is). I still get the itch to go back and play Diablo II every now and then - I would say go for that, especially if you’ve never finished it. Of the three, I’d eliminate Fate - Torchlight does all that Fate did, and it’s newer and shinier (though if you backed me into a corner, I’m not 100% sure what Torchlight does that Fate didn’t do… they’re so similar! The changes are small, though). Should I go back and play Diablo 2, or has its gameplay been improved upon by later games? If I skip Diablo, should I play Fate, or does Torchlight do everything that Fate does, but better? Or should I just jump straight to Torchlight, with the understanding that I still have hours and hours ahead of me before Torchlight 2 comes out, and eventually, the Torchlight MMO?Īny and all advice is welcome, even if you think I’m crazy. I could start over, but I’m seriously considering just bagging the decades-old technology and jumping ahead to either Fate or Torchlight.

The short version is this: I recently finished Diablo, but my hard drive died and wiped my Diablo 2 saved game. game in order, or why I’m currently playing Majora’s Mask and looking forward to Wind Waker. You don’t want to hear my life story of how I went back to play every Super Mario Bros. Okay, I’m an obsessive completionist, but apparently not a very good one.
